Originally popularized by texting phone users in Japan, emoji are representations of facial expressions, objects and other ideas that use a combination of keyboard characters. For a while, actual emoji images have been built into the iOS and the Mac to make using them more expressive, fun and interesting.

It isn't immediately obvious how to access them on the Mac, though, so here is a quick tip to help you get there faster.

  1. To add emojis to your document, go to the Insert tab and select Emoji. Word for the web displays some smileys and people. To choose from the entire set of emojis, select More Emojis. For a few emojis, Word for the web automatically converts characters as you type them. To get this emoji.:-) or:).
  2. By default, the Symbol dialog box shows emoji at first when it's opened. But you can expand it to see other character sets: Scroll to the top and click the toggle button in the right corner: Word. Do any of the following: On the Insert menu, click Advanced Symbol, and then click the Symbols tab.

The trophy emoji is a gold cup, with a engraving on the bottom detailing the award. In Snapchat, the trophy provides access to the Trophy Case for unlocking emoji achievements. Trophy was approved as part of Unicode 6.0 in 2010 and added to Emoji 1.0 in 2015.

How to use emoji on Mac

  1. Position the cursor in any text field you'd like to insert an emoji, like posting a tweet for example.
  2. Use the keyboard shortcut Command - Control - Spacebar to access emoji.
  3. Double-click the emoji you'd like to use and it'll be inserted where you left your cursor.

Emoji are divided into several categories: Smileys & People, Animals & Nature, Food & Drink, Activity, Travel & Places, Objects, Symbols, and Flags If you don't want to scroll through all of them, you can use the search field to find emoji you'd like to use. Type in the first few letters of the face, object or action you'd like to use and it will narrow down your options accordingly.
