Perhaps you want a logo only on the first page of your letterhead. If so,click here to see how to create a letterhead.

  • How do I make a header appear on only the first page of my document? Follow these steps: Open a new word processing document. Enter some or all of the data that you want on your cover (1st) page (or simply hit the return key a few times).
  • Dec 12, 2012  I have Word 2011 for Macintosh. I am trying to insert page numbers so that they start after the cover page and number beginning with '1'. I can't do it because when I go into the header on the first page of text (the second page of the file) it says 'same as previous' and there's no.

If you want to put a different header or footer on the first page without affecting the headers and footers on the other pages: Remove the header or footer from the first page as described above. Click the Header or Footer icon, select a format if desired, and type the new information into the front page.

But if you want no header on the first page, because perhaps it's your cover page, then you need only go to FilePage Setup and go to the Layout tab, and choose Different First Page.

Ramifications

A lot of people don't understand the ramifications of using this setting, so I'll point them out.

  • If you insert a next-page section break later in your document, the new section will also have a Different First Page setup, so you may want to switch that section only back by unchecking it, while the Apply to box says This Section Only.
  • Same as previous and Link to previous in the next section's First Page header will link to the previous First Page header (see Understanding Section Breaks).
  • Having a Different First Page does not allow for different page margins. Only inserting a section break allows that. See Understanding Section Breaks.

  1. Move the cursor over the white space near the top of a page to add or format a header. Similarly, you can move the cursor over the white space near the bottom of a page to add or format a footer.

A prompt appears, telling you to double-click if you want to add a header (or footer).

  2. Double-click in the white space.

Headers and footers are divided into three distinct regions. You’re in the left, right, or center region, depending on where you double-click.

  3. Type your header or footer in the text provided.

  4. Click the Close button or press Esc on your keyboard to exit the Header/Footer dialog.

Formatting your headers and footers in Excel 2011 for Mac

When you’re entering or editing a header or footer, you can use the Header and Footer toolbar buttons to make things fancy.

You can combine codes with text. For example, use Insert Page Number and Insert Number of Pages with additional text like this: Page &[Page] of &[Pages] to print “Page # of #”.

If you prefer the retro look of the old Header/Footer pane from previous versions of Excel, you can still access it by choosing File→Page Setup and then clicking the Header/Footer tab; you can also choose View→Header and Footer.
